About Marina beach

History of Marina beach dates backs to the 16th century. The st George fort was built by the British in 1640 in the vicinity of the beach. in the 1880's the Governor Mount Stuart Elphinstone Grand Duff began to make marina beach look beautiful. Untill then it was a under developed are with full of houses of fisherman's. And the name Marina also called by grand Duff. Marina is an Italian name for beaches.

The beauty of Marina increased day by day. Today, most of the institutions of Chennai city is located in the beach road. Madras university, Senate House, Presidency college and Chepauke palace is on this route. located on the Shores of Marina Beach, There is many memorial of the people who was one of the best part of The Tamil Nadu state. Anna Durai, M.G.R, Jaya Lalita, Karunanidhi...all these monuments are in Marina beach.

In October 1909, The countries first aquarium was established at Marina Beach. Marina is also home to many statues.The statues of thamil poets and writers are in Marina Beach.
